Hi! My name is Akilah, and I’m passionate about supporting my clients in finding peace andresilience amidst the chaos life can throw at us.
Who I Work With
I enjoy working with Teens, Young Adults, Elders, members of the LGBTQ+ community, BIPOC individuals, and non-BIPOC individuals alike. I’m especially passionate about working with those who may be resistant to therapy or who have found themselves wanting to gain a deeper understandingof themselves, their way of thinking, and their way of acting.
The issues I address in therapy include past trauma, anxiety, depression, life dissatisfaction, lifetransitions, career transitions, chronic stress and burnout, emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem and more.
My Style
I truly believe every individual is capable of discovering the resilience within them, especially with a compassionate guide to walk alongside them. As such, I take a Person-Centered approach to counseling that focuses on viewing clients and their struggles non-judgmentally, with positivity and curiosity. The techniques I use in session are grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), but I also draw on skills from Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to suit clients as needed.
My Educational Background
I am currently pursuing my Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at LaGrange College. Prior to becoming a mental health practitioner, I spent six years in the tech field, working in customer support, marketing, sales, and project management. I decided to pursue counseling as a career change after realizing it was my passion to build connections and support others in their personal journeys.
In my own journey, I have experienced various situations--from health scares to trauma and burnout, but I find that my experience has allowed me to have even more compassion for clients experiencing pain and struggles.
That is why I sincerely pride myself on being someone my clients can be themselves around.
Benefits of Working with An Intern!
Firstly, our graduate clinical interns spend years conducting intense research, studying, and developing their craft. Like any good therapist, they possess the following qualities: integrity, empathy, deep compassion, cultural humility, critical self-reflection, and the ability to humanize you and your experience.
Clinical Interns have completed a four-year degree and another two years of coursework in an accredited Master's Degree program, including an internship.
When working with a clinical intern, you get the best of both worlds because:
We are doubly supervised by both school and site supervisors, who monitor and provide feedback on our work. (Two for the price of one!).
We have a fresh perspective with our finger on the pulse of current trends, practices, and research in mental health.
We have more availability for therapy sessions and rarely have a waiting list.
Our fees are significantly lower than current market rates.
We have access to the latest developments in cultural awareness, cross-cultural barriers, and competent care.
Our short-term services enable us to work diligently to achieve results more quickly.
Low-Cost Therapy
Inner Coach Counseling believes it is our responsibility to make healthcare more accessible by providing therapeutic services at affordable rates.
While working toward completing my Master's degree program, I offer a below-market rate of $30 per session and $45 for family and couples therapy. Under some circumstances, I accept a limited number of pro bono slots through the equitable pricing plans.
Insurance Accepted
I am mostly self-pay (sliding scale and some pro bono slots) I can also accept Cigna Insurance.
